The Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce actively monitors and speaks out on legislation at the local, state and federal levels. Together with other area chambers, we form a Northern Virginia Partnership that engages lobbyists to review impending bills during the General Assembly. The chamber regularly weighs in on issues including economic development, healthcare reform, taxation, immigration, education, fiscal reform, tourism, energy policies and more. The Chamber has also played a pivotal role in the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project for more than a decade.
On the Federal level, we were the only chamber in the Commonwealth of Virginia or in the DC region (aside from the U.S. Chamber) to embrace immigration reform as a business issue. Our platform has four thrusts: the safety of our citizens; a guest worker visa that allows temporary or seasonal employ for appropriate industries; encouragement of neighboring countries to stabilize and grow their economies and thus reduce the number of people seeking to cross our borders illegally; and quicker decisions on applicant status for refugees and other new arrivals. This platform we shopped with our Congressmen and Senators on Capitol Hill.
We are a part of the Northern Virginia Partnership, the largest business coalition in the Commonwealth and supported by our on-site lobbyist during General Assembly. Our lobbying efforts tackle issues around transportation, taxes and regulation, healthcare, education and workforce, and economic development. We score our legislators on their votes corresponding with our agenda and we have a high rate of success.
Legislative Agenda 2017
Legislative Scorecard 2017
Our local advocacy efforts center around two key issues, economic development and transportation.
Development is the engine which determines the quality of life in a community. If development is healthy, jobs are plentiful and residential property taxes are decreased. The Chamber tracks development and its stimuli across global, state and local spans. Our global taskforce explores opportunities for area business to expand into global players. Our taskforce helped develop our regional council for GO Virginia. Our Economic Development Committee examines development issues across two counties and the Town of Herndon. With much of the region’s growth occurring in the Dulles Region, we actively discuss, monitor and share with our legislators our business-friendly opinions on proposals affecting zoning, land usage, transportation and infrastructure. (This Committee meets the third Tuesday at 4 pm at DBI Architects in Reston.)
Transportation & Infrastructure
The Dulles Regional Chamber has been a key player in the history of the Silver Line, keeping it alive and in two phases. We are supportive of a bridge across the Potomac, the Bi-County Parkway, widening of Rte. 66 both inside and outside the Beltway, and of public-private partnerships that offer new choices for commuters. We strongly support the formation of a WMATA Safety Commission, which is necessary for the continued operation of Metro. And we are big supporters of Dulles International Airport, the economic engine of Northern Virginia.
