With the help of 60 young men, they opened the YMCA of the City of Washington – just one year after the first YMCA was established in the U.S. Their mission was to elevate the “spiritual and moral condition” of their fellows in a “crude, raw and highly transient city of 40,000…where vice, alcoholism, delinquency and crime defied imagination.” One year later, Rev. Anthony Bowen made an unprecedented impact in civil rights by organizing the first-ever “Colored YMCA.” YMCA Anthony Bowen was a social and cultural center for Washington’s African-American community throughout the 1900s.

Our Cause

Our mission is to foster the spiritual, mental and physical development of individuals, families and communities according to the ideals of inclusiveness, equality and mutual respect for all.

We know that lasting personal and social change comes about when we all work together. That’s why, at the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Our Impact

The YMCA is one of the largest preschool, afterschool, and camp providers serving families in Washington, D.C., suburban Maryland, and northern Virginia. Every year, we provide opportunities in wellness, aquatics, youth sports, overnight camp, and more for over 250,000 people through our 16 branches and program centers.

Our utmost goal is to make the Y and all we offer accessible and available to the entire community. With the help of our generous donors, community partners, and members, we were able to provide $494,070 in scholarships and subsidies to 1,495 children, adults, and families in 2021.

From dedicated board members to talented program volunteers, these caring friends and neighbors help the YMCA serve more individuals and impact more communities every year More than 475 volunteers gave more than 23,000 hours of their time and talent in 2021 to help the YMCA fulfill its mission.

Diversity & inclusion

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is an inclusive organization and defines inclusion as the deliberate and conscientious effort to be knowledgeable about differences, supportive of others, and active in changing structures that are oppressive to various groups, with the understanding that everyone brings valuable skills and abilities to the YMCA. It is the day to day living of the “for all” part of our YMCA mission statement.
