FYI #1: Franklin Delano Roosevelt (diagnosed at age 39); Donald Sutherland; Mia Farrow; Joni Mitchell; Alan Alda; Neil Young; Ben Bradlee; Itzhak Perlman; Jack Nicklaus; names you know who had polio at some point in their lives

FYI #2: Rotary launched its efforts to eradicate polio in 1979 and enacted its international campaign PolioPlus in 1985. More than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. Polio mainly affects children under age 5. There is no cure, but polio is preventable with a vaccine. In 2009 the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined forces with funding and grants. Only 2 countries remain endemic (Afghanistan and Pakistan), with reduced cases since 1988 at 99.9%. We still have to be vigilant, though, as a case was reported two years ago in New York.

See you there!
